Myths about Psychosomatics

  • Psychosomatic disorders are not real illnesses – this is not true, psychosomatic disorders can cause real physical symptoms.
  • Psychosomatic disorders are only caused by emotional or psychological factors – while psychological factors can play a role in the development of psychosomatic disorders, they are also influenced by other factors such as genetics, biology, and environment.
  • Psychosomatic disorders are only experienced by weak-minded people – anyone can develop a psychosomatic disorder, regardless of their mental or emotional strength.
  • Psychosomatic disorders can be treated only with psychological therapies – While psychological therapies can be helpful in treating psychosomatic disorders, a combination of psychological and medical interventions may be needed for optimal treatment.
  • Only women get psychosomatic disorders – both men and women can develop psychosomatic disorders.
  • Psychosomatic disorders are caused by past traumas - while past traumas may contribute to the development of psychosomatic disorders, they are not the only cause.
